|19/9/16||Ojijo was still impossible to talk to so Shadrak arranged a taxi at short notice. He drove like the wind to Entebee in 1 hour! Usual palaver in the airport, total chaos, just pushed through it. Plane left early (4:10) with the minimum of fuss. Kenya Airways have got it right with little intervention in crowd control. Arrived in Nairobi on time but left 30 minutes late for no apparent reason, again no fuss at boarding, just late. Arrived in Joberg and hour late due to low cloud and all aircraft having to use the ILS landing system, but it looked OK to me. Made it through immigration, had to wait an age for my bag, dropped it off with Mango but queried the boarding pass as the boarding time had moved beyond the departure time! This was due to another delay of 30 minutes. Slept most of the way and we landed in Durban at 15:15 and I was out of the airport in 15 minutes including a shave! Taxied into town (a real taxi this time!) and checked into the hotel. Met my contact and dined in the restaurant before bedtime. What a long day!!|
|18/9/16||The dog woke me a couple of times during the night but otherwise a good night's sleep. Rested a little and did a little work on the computer. Walked up to David's house to say my farewells and met his wife and one of his daughters. Missed Henry, him being at church, so bogaed down to town and withdrew the rest of the money. Met Shadrack and ate Kiplata and chips after a bottle of beer. Bogaed back to Kitete and packed and rested. Shadrak rang at 11:45 to tell me he could not get in touch with Ojijo.|
|17/9/16||Good nights sleep last night and awake at 6:45. Showered and shaved and, eventually, ate breakfast. Bogaed up to the office and met Shadrak. Walked into town and tried to get money for Shadrak's tyres but the machine thought I'd taken enough! Took a taxi to Kampala and bought masking tape for the mesh for the windows in the honey store. Walked across Kampala to the taxi stand for Louwero (or Luweero if you're so minded!) then hung around in the local filling station where Peter (the farm manager) eventually collected us. Met Ben and Brenda then walked around the farm viewing the various activities. Took a traditional lunch under the trees then planted some trees in memory of our visit. Drove back to Seeta with Ben, Brenda and Peter the Shadrak and I taxied back to Mukono and I bogaed to Kitete in the dark!|
Awoke after only 2 dog
incidents. He doesn't like the rain! Arose at 7:30 to wash and ate
breakfast. Went to the office and met the team plus Bamuta Jasper to discuss
our proposal for smokeless fires which seemed to go down well.
Shadrak, Bamuta and I left for vists as follows:
Bamuta's farm at Nsambwe where he wants to develop a fish farm.
Fred Juba and his start up nursery in Nakanyonyi in Nabbale
Patricia's rabit farm in Nyanjia (who we later saw at our lunch stop)
Namananga Honey Bee Farm.
Returned back to the office and walked back to the house for an evening designing a house.
|15/9/16||Better night last night with only 2 barking sessions. Up at 7:30 for pot shower, shave and breakfast. Out of the house at 8:30 and arrived at the office before 9:00. Shadrak showed up at 9:30 then went off to the shop. After some huffing and puffing we left the office at 9:50 and arrived in Kampala at 11:20. On time, but we had another 5km to do by taxi. Arrived at the mall at 11:35. Nolbert said I'll be 10 minutes and 25 minutes later we went to Ojijo's office but he's not there! Then Nolbert turned up and we had an interesting discussion with him for an hour or so. Finally met Ojijo in front of the plaza and he drove us to Prayer Mountain to meet Sylvia Laughlin, an African American Pastor, though not very interesting as a prospect for funds. Ojijo drove us back to Kampala and offered to drive me to the airport on Sunday night! Called in at a solar shop in Mukono before returning to the EACO office then back to Miriam's. Dragged off to church for 30 minutes with Debra. What a performance!|
|14/9/16||Arose 6 times during the night to chase off the stupid dog. Finally got up at 6:40, washed and shaved then retrieved my hat from Henry's house before stopping a boda boda to take me to the honey sop wher I met Shadrak. Caught a taxi to Inganga way beyond Jinja t0 inspect the second 2 buses in the transport project. Watched loco, breakdown crane and a few wagons shunting in some sidings. Returned to Mukono for lunch and met with the headmaster of St. Edward's School to discuss financing a classroom project. Walked down to the main road to buy mesh for the windows of the honey building then walked back to the house to type this.|
|13/9/16||Another good night's sleep and woke up refreshed. Showered and shaved then ate breakfast. Walked up to Senjuba Henry's house and met Senjuba David who showed Debra around the fish pool. Spent the rest of the morning discussing the situation relating to the fish farm then had a late lunch. After a period of very heavy rain, Ivan of Infosis joined us to look at the pool and discuss their mobile banking system. Finally, he took his leave at about 7:00 but required the assistance of 6 of us to push his car up the muddy bank!|
|12/9/16||Awoke after a great night's sleep. Showered and shaved then ate breakfast. Went to the office and discussed the transportation project with Shadrak. Met Ben who is sorting out the certification of the honey. After lunch taxied to Kilage then boda boda to Namananga. Met the chairperson upon whose farm the Honey Bee Farm sits then inspected the bees. Walked back to Namasumbi and observed the new trading centre building and the church and school. Boda bodaed back to Kilage then taxi back to Mukono.|
|11/9/16||Lazy Sunday. After that dog returned and barked for an hour between 4:000 and 5:00, awoke at 7:30 and arose at 8:00. Took to the latrine and shower then had breakfast of egg and spaghetti! Lazed around until 10:30 then Debra and I went to at the top of the road to meet Shadrack and Joshum and took a taxi to the Africa Hotel. Enjoyed swimming in the pool and trying to teach Debra to float! Later we were joined by Allen and enjoyed a lunch of beef, pork and local vegetables. Lazed the afternoon chatting and swimming. Left at about 5:00 and taxied back to Mukono. Walked down to Kitete where I had a meeting with Senjuba Henry then returned to base camp for ball games and tea. Relaxed the evening away.|
|10/9/16||Awoke at 7:30 and had a visit to the katrine then a pot shower and a shave. Had breakfast and then headed into town to sort out the data plan for the phone and get cash. Took a Boga Boga to town. Cash machine not working but managed to get the data plan going. Back to the cash machine and obtained the required cash. Walked up to the office and met Shadrak. Talked business until Allen arrived then we talked schools and beads. Then headmaster arrived and we talked schools. The we had a late lunch cooked by Mirina. Boga Bogaed down to the chairman's house where we talked on a wide range of subjects and tried a wide range of drinks, snacks and food prepared by his wife. At 7:00 we headed to our respective homes and chips and chapatti before bed.|
|9/9/16||Up at 6:30 to the call of Mama and washed and shaved. Quick breakfast and off up the road at 7:20. Met Shadrak near the office and walked down to the road to try for a taxi without much luck. Walked into town and caught the bus to Kampala. Very busy as usual. After some delay met Bukenya Ham and boarded the bus to Mubende. After 40 minutes or so the bus decided to leave Kampala. 3 hours later we arrivedd at Mubende. Tried to get my phone fixed without success. Borded a Boda Boda and drove a few kms down the main road then walked another km along a dirt track, across a stream and up a montain! Viewed the land then returned to the road. Walked up to the cafe and at the second attempt borded a second set of Boda Boda and travelled to the next piece of land. After viewing that we returned to the motorbikes and returned to ...... Tried and succeeded in getting the phone fixed and tried to get on the bus to Kampala. This was full, as was the next, so we had lunch under an umbrella until a 3rd bus arrived which was able to carry us to Kampala, eventually arriving at 20:10. Then a quick walke through a chaotic Kampala and onto the bus to Mokono, eventually. Bought some tea bags and got another Boda Boda back to Mama's house arriving at 10:25pm. What a day!|
|8/9/16||Woke up at 8:00 for wash, breakfast and walk to the EACO office. Talked with Shadrak then a bee expert before going into town for cash and sim card. Back to the office and met David then had lunch. Bought air time then walked, in the rain, down to the fish farm for an inspection. Then back to the house for tea. Still raining|
|7/9/16||Dozed on and off through the night on some very comfortable setees. Had a breakfast of fruit as soon as the shops opened at 5:00. Did some work on the computer then walked to the departure gate. 15 miinutes after boarding time we boarded without any fuss, no announcements just the staff stood by the aisles. Disappointment increased when my seat number didn't correlate with the seating plan - hence no extra legroom. However, after a brief discussion with the staff the invited me to an empty seat behing the bulkhead, the only trouble was that there was so much legroom that everyone wanted to use it as a corridor. Watched, slept and dozed through two and a half films, landed exactly on time, straight throygh health control and passport control and Shadrak and his son were there waiting for me. Drove back to Ggalu Kitete where Miriam and Debre greeted me. Took a quick cup of tea before sleep.|
|6/9/16||Woke up at 4:00 and dozed until 5:15 when I arose. Tidied the bedroom then went and made tea and ate breakfast. Showered, shaved, etc. and left the house at 6:45. Drove down to Tavira. Temperature here was 10 degrees lower that in Cheirosa! Caught the 7:30 coach to Lisbon then via the underground to the airport. Flew to Brussels arriving early, just before 7:00 pm. Nothing untoward happened, everything happening on time!|
|5/9/16||31C at 8:00! Phew!! Glad I'm moving out tomorrow. Awoke at 6:00 this morning and dozed while listening to the news. Made tea then read more news. A bulldozer appeared on our land chopping down the bushes so drove down to see the guys. Eusebio, the president of the local hunting association, explained they had a grant to do the work. I explained that he needed to seek permission before doing it but had no objection to clearing fire breaks. Returned to the home to work then swim before lunch.|
